2016 Summer Read

Hello Autumn! What did I read in Summer?

I did not read as much as I would have loved to (as usual) for various reasons, first of all, "The Wretched African" is more of a scholarly read not a story per se. Secondly, Ama is a very well written historical fiction, however it is a dense read. Both factors, for instance and more,  made my summer reading progress very slow.

As you  might have noticed, my summer read is based mainly on slavery. The East African slave trade (which I did not know about) and the  Transatlantic slave trade.

In addition, with regard to my Psychology degree studies, let me say that I did really well in my subjects, passing one with honours. I was really excited. This semester, I have registered to read Developmental Psychology I (Jean Piaget, Vygotsky and etc), Conflict and Mediation  and Intro. Research Methods in Psychology. I hope to do well again.

Sadly this summer, I found out that Elechi Amadi author of  The Concubine, an African literature classic, passed away on the 29th of June at the age of 82. Read in the guardian

Furthermore, my husband and I traveled the Crete island (Greece), it is one of our best travel experience.

We were able to enjoy sunset right on the beach, something I have always longed for.

I turned 30 on the 6th of September this year and it was such a good feeling! The picture below was actually taken the very day I turned 30.

We visited Amsterdam to celebrate it, it was surely a trip worth it!

While in Amsterdam,  we couldn't visit Anne Frank Museum as we've earlier planned, however, I got her book "The Diary of a Young Girl" Anne Frank which I look forward to read and review.

Thanks to Literafricas' review of Tierra de brujas, la vida en un psiquiátrico de Kenia by María Ferrira, I requested the book as my 30th birthday gift and I got it. I also look forward to reading and reviewing it.

Right now I am reading:

What about you? What did you read in summer or in the last three months? I hope it isn't too late to ask. :-) Have you read any book mentioned here? What are you reading now?

  1. Happy belated birthday. Hope the next chapter of your life is one filled with love, light, success and happiness.

Very sad about Elechi Amadi's passing. The Concubine is one of my top 5 book.

Right now I am reading "The Space Between Us" by Thrity Umrigar. I usually read African literature exclusively however this time around, I decided to give Indian Literature a go and so far so good.

    1. Thank you for the birthday wishes :-)

Yes, sad in deed with regard to Elechi Amadi's passing away. At least he has left a legacy. The Concubine will forever be an African literature classic.

Wow.. I have read "The Space Between US" by Thrity Umrigar it is a good book indeed, I enjoyed it a lot. Thrity is a superb writer.. till today I still feel the pervading sense of inequality, injustice I felt after reading the book few years ago. It can be slow sometimes but please read along. It will be worth it.

      Thanks :-)

  2. Belated happy birthday, Mary. I am sure you had a super time with hubby.

My reading has been poor to say the least. Haiku has taken over. But I hope to remedy it. Infact i have started with Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. And I'm enjoying it.
